Students' Rights and Responsibilities

Students' Rights and Student Code of Conduct
A full statement of the rights accorded to students and the conduct expected of them may be found in the Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Procedures, available from the Office of Special Student Programs, 738 William Pitt Union.

Social Regulations
The responsibility for determining the nature and extent of the social regulations in specific cases rests with the student governing body in each area. Residence hall social regulations, for example, are determined by the Resident Student Association.
Specific regulations regarding student conduct may be found in one of the publications listed below:

The Pitt Pack--student handbook consisting of four individual pamphlets:

     Kaleidoscope--residence hall social policy

Interfraternity Council Constitution and By-Laws--fraternity social policy

Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Procedures

University Policy on Students' Rights
In compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the University guarantees that students have the right to inspect all personally identifiable records maintained by the institution and may challenge the content and accuracy of those records through appropriate institutional procedures. It is further guaranteed by the University that student records containing personally identifiable information will not be released except as permitted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Credit by Course Examination
Credit by course examination refers to credits earned by passing an examination administered by the University, in absence of registration for the course. A particular course cannot be taken by a student as credit by course examination if that student has previously taken the same course while enrolled in a professional curriculum within SHRS. Specific courses open to credit by course examination shall be determined by the individual department. Students must apply for credit by course examination and take the exam early in the term. Students will receive credit for the course which may be applied toward graduation. If a student fails the credit by course examination, he or she will be required to register for the course. A particular credit by course examination may only be taken once.

Academic Integrity
The SHRS Judicial System handles cases of both student and faculty grievances of academic integrity violations and attempts first by informal administrative means to resolve these grievances. If satisfaction is not reached at the informal level, then the formal procedure of convening an Academic Review Board may be requested by the student or faculty member.
The regulations, procedures, and penalties (such as dismissal from the University for student infractions) concerning academic integrity are outlined in the SHRS Statement on Academic Integrity. Students may contact the SHRS Registrar in 4024 Forbes Tower, telephone (412) 647-1257, for further information.
