Grading Policy

1. Each department will clearly state its policy regarding grades and pre-clinic/clinic evaluation at the beginning of the course or, in the case of clinical grades, at the beginning of the student's clinical activity in that department. Included in the policy will be a statement regarding the purpose, frequency, and contribution of quizzes to the final grade. The policy is to be distributed to all students at the first class meeting.

2. Establishment of minimum levels of performance for the assignment of letter grades is the responsibility and prerogative of the individual department and/or course director.

3. Counseling begins with the faculty responsible for a course. The faculty should specifically alert any student who has less than a "C"grade.

4. All required courses are graded on an A, B, C, D, or F basis. Elective courses beyond the required number may, with the permission of the faculty, be taken as Satisfactory/Audit ("S/N")

5. The University definitions of grading symbols are as follows:

  • Probation
The main purpose of this action is to formally place the student on notice, in an unmistakeable way, of serious academic problems. The School of Dental Medicine Promotion has established criteria by which students' academic performance will be evaluated. The specific criteria are published in the appropriate program Guidelines, which also describe the regulations governing suspension and dismissal.
