SHRS Graduate Course Descriptions (continued)

CSD 2081 RESEARCH STRATEGIES AND TACTICS 3 cr.
The purpose of this course is to stimulate an appreciation and an interest in research and to begin to teach students the skills needed to be wise consumers and potential producers of research. These goals are also expected to inspire a spirit of inquiry applicable to the clinical progress as well as to research. Areas covered: research design (descriptive, experiments, pseudo-experimental designs, true experimental designs, quasi-experimental designs, and within subject experimental designs); assessing differences (t-tests, single factor analysis of variance, multiple-factor analysis of variance, nonparametric tests); assessing relationships (correlation, prediction, factor analysis methods); reviewing research articles; and research ethics and informed consent.

CSD 2082 PROFESSIONAL ISSUES 2 cr.
This course is a lecture-discussion about the profession of speech-language pathology. It includes considerations of the historical, legal, and ethical foundations of the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Specific focus will be on certification, ethics, the structure and affairs of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and accreditation of service and educational programs. In addition, state and federal legislation will be discussed as well as ways for individuals to become active participants in professional concerns.

CSD 2250 CHILD LANGUAGE DISORDERS 2 3 cr.
This course concerns advanced topics in the etiology, diagnosis, and remediation of development and acquired language disorders in children.

CSD 2251 VESTIBULAR ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION 3 cr.
    Alternating years
This course introduces students to the theory and practica of vestibular assessment. The principle areas of study include the neurophysiological bases of vestibular functia, oculomotor testing, and positional and caloric administration and assessment. The course also includes an introduction to recent clinical advances in vestibular assessment.

CSD 2252 ADVANCED PHYSIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT 3 cr.
    Alternating years
The purpose of this course is to provide training beyond the basic background in clinical electrophysiological methods and the measurement and applications of the short-latency auditory evoked potentials. Upon completion of the course, the student should have an in-depth grasp of the underlying physiologic phenomena being recorded, methods and influence of mode of stimulation, the normal and pathologic variables involved, and audiologic applications and interpretations of these measurements. The student also should have developed competency in the performance of evaluations of the short latency potentials, basic competency in the measurement of other evoked potentials, and familiarity with such advanced applications as intraoperative monitoring.

CSD 2275 COGNITIVE-COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS 3 cr.
This course will address the nature, assessment, and management of cognitive and communicative disorders in three populations: adults with right hemisphere brain damage, traumatic brain injury, and dementing conditions. In the first portion of the class, students will become familiar with current concepts, models, and measures of cognitive functions that are associated with, or potentially underlie, the neurologic communication disorders in these populations. Then students will apply this information to differentiating the cognitive-communicative disorders from each other and from aphasia, and to selecting or generating diagnostic and treatment approaches best suited to patients' characteristics and needs.

CSD 2450 TOPICS IN AUDIOLOGY 1 3 cr.
    Corequisite: CSD 2455
A series of short courses in current topics in audiology. Content and instructors will be announced. Examples: Educational Audiology, Plasticity of the Auditory System, Cerumen Management, Central Auditory Processing, Counseling, and Digital/Programmable Technology.

CSD 2454 AMPLIFICATION 2 3 cr.
This course allows for in-depth discussion of topics related to hearing aid evaluation, fitting, and selection and signal processing. This course has a seminar format.

CSD 2455 TOPICS IN AUDIOLOGY 2 3 cr.
    Corequisite: CSD 2450
This is a registration for second year audiology students.

CSD 2456 DEVELOPMENTAL SPEECH PERCEPTION 3 cr.
    Alternating years
This seminar focuses on the development of speech perception and how it relates to changing speech in language and auditory functions.

CSD 2478 SEMINAR IN SPEECH LANGUAGE SCIENCE 2-3 cr.
    Corequisite: CSD 2450
Content varies across a spectrum of topics in speech and language science. Students review pertinent literature, and present and discuss specific topics of interest.

CSD 2479 SEMINAR IN SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY 3 cr.
Content varies across the spectrum of speech and language disorders. Each term has a special and specific focus. Students review pertinent literature, and present and discuss specific topics of interest. Past examples: Clinical Decision-Making, Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Special Tests in Aphasia, and Seminar in Fluency Disorders.

CSD 2902 DIRECTED STUDY 1-9 cr.
Students will explore theoretical or applied questions related to their area of interest by analyzing relevant literature under the direction of an appropriate faculty adviser.

CSD 2970 TEACHING PRACTICUM 1-3 cr.
Doctoral students are supervised in gaining experience in various aspects of University classroom instruction, such as preparing materials, providing lectures and leading discussions, and constructing and evaluating tests or other assignments. Specific opportunities and responsibilities are determined in consultation with the faculty supervisor.

CSD 2971 RESEARCH PRACTICUM 1-6 cr.
This variable credit experience provides opportunities for students to be involved in research studies under the supervision of faculty members.

CSD 2972 EXAMINATION 1-3 cr.
Examination credit registration gives official registration status to a student who will be taking an examination but who may not be registered for any other courses.

CSD 2973 PRACTICUM IN CLINIC SUPERVISION 1-3 cr.
This course provides advanced graduate students with the opportunity to obtain experience supervising first-year master's students in clinical practica. The advanced students will work in consultation with the director or the assistant director of the University Speech and Hearing Clinic Network.
