Public Health Program

Director: James M. Klingensmith, ScD(Hyg)
Office: A614 Crabtree Hall

The program provides doctoral-level health professionals with advanced training to perform in the roles of public health generalists and in public health leadership positions, rather than focusing on preparing public health specialists. The administration and implementation of the program is overseen by the GSPH Multidisciplinary MPH Advisory Committee.

The program is open to the following candidates:
1. holders of doctoral degrees in the health sciences;

2. advanced medical, dental, and veterinary students considered on an individual basis;

3. individuals with extensive experience in health-related fields after review and approval of the Multidisciplinary MPH Advisory Committee;

4. students with advanced standing and holders of doctoral degrees from other professional schools considered on an individual basis.

The multidisciplinary program provides an opportunity to meet the needs of a growing number of health science professionals desirous of practicing in a public health or community-based setting where data-based concepts, preventive medicine, health promotion, and public health practice will be of benefit. It is expected that multidisciplinary MPH graduates will practice in such areas as public health agencies or clinical, academic, or instructional settings in community and teaching hospitals.

The multidisciplinary MPH program will require participants to take a minimum of 30 credit hours. Nine of those credit hours will be taken in the GSPH core curriculum, which provides the foundation for all of the GSPH departmental programs. Students must take 6-8 credits of program course requirements, and 11 or more elective credits from a list of designated courses. A two-credit essay is also required of all candidates.
