Family and Marital Therapy Certificate
The post-master's Family and Marital Therapy Certificate has been jointly designed by family therapy educators and practitioners to provide a planned sequence of courses and clinical supervision/practica that will promote integration of theory and practice and enhance competence for practitioners of marital and family therapy. This certificate program is currently undergoing revision in keeping with changes in professional licensure and the practice environment into a more flexible design. The curriculum now operating is as described below.
Through part-time study over a two-year period, participants will accumulate 22 credits of academic courses, field practice, and group supervision beyond the master's degree. These courses, however, cannot be taken for MSW or PhD course credits. The program is designed to meet the needs of working professionals, and classes meet one evening each week during the fall and spring terms. Course work and group supervision can be used toward American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist's (AAMFT) clinical membership and national certification.
Admission Requirements
The following are requirements for admission into the post-master's Family Therapy Certificate Program:
A master's degree in social work or a related helping profession
Two to three years of post-master's professional experience in a clinical setting Two professional references
A written statement describing the reason for applying to the program
Applicants may also be asked to attend an admission interview or provide video or audio tapes of clinical work beyond the above criteria. Implementation of the program is contingent upon a suitable number of qualified applicants being available. Currently, the program admits students on a biennial basis.
On a limited basis, courses in the Family Therapy Program can be taken on a non-certificate or continuing education basis with permission from the program administrator and course faculty. Credits taken in the Family Therapy Certificate Program cannot be applied to degree programs.

Employee Assistance Program Certificate
The post-master's Employee Assistance Program Certificate has been jointly developed by social work educators and employee assistance professionals to provide a specialized sequence of courses, field practice, and supervision for social workers and other helping professionals who wish to practice in workplace settings. The Employee Assistance Program Certificate, as currently designed, provides 21 credits (315 hours) of post-master's study, and participants have up to four years of part-time study to complete the certificate program, although the program can be completed within two years. This certificate program is presently undergoing revision.
The Employee Assistance Program certificate is structured to meet the educational needs of working professionals through a series of weekend and summer institutes integrated with field practice and group supervision. A core overview course is required, and students complete a capstone seminar on a topic drawn from their study in the program. The program focuses on the six key Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) curricular areas:
Work Organizations
Human Resource Management
Employee Assistance Policy and Administration
Employee Assistance Director Services
Chemical Dependency and Addiction
Personal and Psychological Problems
Participants in the program will also be prepared to take the national test for EAPA certification.

Three years' experience in clinical/director, addictions, or employee assistance practiceTwo professional references

Applicants may also be asked to attend an admissions interview or to provide other documentation that may be helpful in assessing admissions. Admissions are made on an ongoing basis, but operation of the program is contingent on a suitable number of qualified applicants. Courses and institutes offered by the program may also be taken on a non-certificate credit or continuing education basis.

Home and School Visitor Certification Program
Post-master's degree social work students interested in obtaining Pennsylvania Home and School Visitor certification must apply to the School of Social Work as continuing education students. Post-master's social work students seeking certification must also submit a completed application package, have an admissions interview with the program chair, and pay the admission processing fee of $40 to the University of Pittsburgh, School of Social Work.
