Student Organizations
American Student Dental Association
The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is an organization of students working for students. It is composed of local chapters at each of the 54 dental schools in the United States, which work together to form the regional and national organizations of ASDA. Nationally, ASDA is concerned with legislation, financial aid, improvement of dental education, distribution of publications, and the general welfare of dental students. The University of Pittsburgh's ASDA chapter serves as the Dental School's student government and has grown to be one of the country's strongest local chapters.
ASDA serves as a vital link between students and administration and provide sits membership with valuable professional and social benefits. ASDA acts as a liaison between Pitt dental students and organizations like the Pennsylvania Dental Association, the Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania, and the Dental Alumni Association. These groups offer students valuable seminars, information, and leadership opportunities. All students are encouraged to become ASDA members.
Student National Dental Association
The Student National Dental Association (SNDA) addresses the needs and concerns of minority dental students. The organization serves as a support group for minority students and works to provide a national communications network among students as a means of improving the health-employment distribution among minority and ethnic groups. SNDA works closely with the National Dental Association and strives to educate and involve members in the social, moral, and ethical obligations of the dental profession. The University of Pittsburgh chapter actively pursues the organization's goals and is heavily involved in the recruitment of minority students. Social activities for members and service to the school and dental community are among the many areas addressed by the local SNDA chapter.
American Association of Women Dental Students
The association supports the professional development of women students and calls attention to the contributions of women as members of the dental profession. The school's chapter provides seminars and speakers at monthly meetings and works closely with the parent organization to help recent graduates establish themselves professionally.
Dental Fraternities
Two national dental fraternities have chapters at the School of Dental Medicine: Psi Omega and Delta Sigma Delta. Each fraternity provides for both the professionaland social growth of its members through a variety of activities, such as special clinics, lectures with noted speakers, and social affairs.
American Association For Dental Research
Membership in the Pittsburgh AADR section is open to qualified faculty, alumni, students, and persons with allied interests. Research reports in the fields of biological sciences, oral health, and dental materials are presented by members and guests. Meetings are open to all interested persons.
Student Research Group
This student organization is composed of students interested in research in those areas of interest to the dental profession basic sciences, dental sciences, and behavioral sciences.
Student American Society for Dentistry for Children
SASDC is an organization within the Dental School concerned with enhancing students' knowledge of pediatric dentistry. Students participate in various projects and attend monthly lectures by guest speakers.
Academy of Dentistry for The Handicapped
The group's purpose is to acquaint students with this special population. Through monthly meetings and trips to local facilities for the handicapped, members learn more about effective treatment of the disabled. The group's goal is not only to focus on the dental needs of the handicapped but also to learn more about how they live and cope with their limitations.
