The First Professional Education Program

  • Admission Requirements
Course work: The requirement for admission to the School of Dental Medicine is completion of 90 semester hours with a desired overall QPA of 3.00. An undergraduate degree should preferably be received from an accredited college before matriculation at the dental school, but this is not required. The following required course work must be completed before matriculating:

    English 6 semester hours
Biology (lab must be included) 8 semester hours
    Physics 6 semester hours
    Inorganic Chemistry 8 semester hours
    Organic Chemistry 6 semester hours
Quarter-hour credits must be converted to semester-hour credits.

Dental Admission Test (DAT): This test is an objective instrument administered by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association (ADA)and is accepted by all dental schools in the United States. The DAT should be taken no later than October of the calendar year preceding the year of expected entrance to the School of Dental Medicine. The test covers Survey of Natural Science, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and Perceptual Ability (two- and three-dimensional problem solving).

Proficiency in written and spoken English is required of all international applicants. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is mandatory, with a minimum score of 650 necessary for admission. The Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP) may also be required.

Application: All applications are processed through the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). Although our deadline for applying through AADSAS is February 1 of the anticipated entering year, AADSAS will begin processing applications in June. Candidates are encouraged to apply any time after June of the calendar year preceding the year of expected entrance to the School of Dental Medicine. Once the AADSAS application is reviewed in the Admissions Office, additional information will be requested. An application fee of $35 ($50 for non-U.S. citizens) will be requested at that time.

Interviews: Formal admissions interviews will be scheduled only after applications have been reviewed. All applicants are welcome to visit the school at anytime.

Selection of Students: The Admissions Committee will begin to review applications in November. Students are selected on the basis of academic achievement, recommendations, and performance on the DAT. All candidates are thoroughly evaluated and seriously considered. Letters of acceptance will be mailed on or after December 1 until the class is filled. Once an applicant is accepted, a nonrefundable $500 tuition deposit will be required to hold a place in the class. A second deposit of $500 is required by May 1st of the entering year.

Transfer Students: The Admissions Committee will consider transfer students who are in good academic and disciplinary standing from other accredited dental programs if space permits. Those candidates must meet all entrance requirements and may be required to take written and/or practical examinations. Completed course work will be considered for transfer status on a case-by-case basis.

  • Curriculum
The curriculum for the School of Dental Medicine begins with a strong foundation in the sciences that are basic to knowledge of the structure and function of the human being in health and in sickness. The program progresses through the mastery and correlation of the clinical sciences, skills, and arts to the development of a frame of reference from which one can mobilize the resources of the dentist and associated professional personnel in both the delivery of health care and the contribution to community well-being by education for the prevention of illness. These concepts include the responsibility for contributing to the body of scientific knowledge by questioning, investigating, and teaching.

The curriculum in dental medicine is organized to require four academic years for completion. Flexibility is built into the program to allow for reasonable extension beyond the four academic years, as the learning rate of the student may require. Tuition is charged for each academic period of such extension.

Objective: The primary objective of the dental curriculum is to graduate practitioners who attest to the purposes of the University and the goals of the School of Dental Medicine and who will advance the knowledge and understanding of health, disease, and the ways to improve health and the dental health care delivery systems through basic and applied research.

The first terms of the dental curriculum consist of courses in the basic and preclinical sciences or dental laboratory technique courses. Clinical experiences commensurate with the level of training begin in January ofthe student's second year.

The second digit of a course number indicates the year (i.e., first, second, third, or fourth) the course is offered; the third digit indicates the term or session in which the course is offered; and the last digit indicates the type of course/lecture, lab, seminar, or clinic. The last digit of clinical courses is always "9." The educational program is outlined below. (All course offerings and sequencing are subject to change without notice.)
